Child Protection and Safeguarding

At Stanford Junior School, safeguarding children and young people is everyone's responsibility. Everyone who comes into contact with children and families has a role to play. The welfare of our children is our paramount concern. Our school is a community and all those directly connected, staff members, governors, parents, families and children, have an essential role to play in making it safe and secure.

Our Ethos

Our school provides a caring, positive, safe and stimulating environment that promotes our school values and the emotional, mental health and wellbeing of the individual child.

School staff work in a trauma-informed way, based upon the understanding that a child’s experiences of adversity and trauma can have long-term impact and leave them vulnerable to further harm, as well as educationally disadvantaged in facing barriers to attendance, learning, behaviour and mental health.

Children are enabled and encouraged to talk openly and to feel confident that they will be listened to. The children are taught the skills they need to stay safe and to ask for help if they need it.

We recognise that all adults within the school, including permanent and temporary staff, volunteers and governors, have a full and active part to play in protecting our children from harm. We recognise the importance of enabling all adults to share the full range of possible concerns about children and about adults promptly.

We work with parents to build an understanding of the school’s responsibilities to ensure the welfare of all children and young people, including the need for referrals to other agencies in some situations.

Operation Encompass

Operation Encompass is a project supported by Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary that aims to safeguard and support children and young people who are involved in or affected by incidents involving domestic abuse.

When Operation Encompass comes into effect locally, all officers who attend a DV&A incident where there are children present will email the safeguarding leads at the school with basic information. This will allow the school to better support the child the next day, and help put their behaviour into context.
